Every antler is an adventure waiting to happen. For thirty years
now, I have worked with my art. I still love the feel of every new antler in my hand, as I anticipate the adventure
within. Each antler is unique and has a spirit. The art of antler is alive within, waiting to flow out. As I hold
the antler up to the light it talks to me. I’m able to feel the features within, sometimes sunlight, moonlight,
sound, wind, or water. Observing the points on the antler these features flow out in different shapes.
This form of art can be challenging, each antler is unique and has its own shapes to contend with. For this same
reason it is also very rewarding. Each sculpture increases in value because an exact duplicate is an impossibility.
These one of a kind sculptures will be treasured family heirlooms for many generations to follow.
My antler sculptures are carved in a way that light throughout the day, from different parts of the room, reflect
off of them allowing different features to be more apparent and take on a whole new mood. |
Moose antler accommodates the spirit of the eagle through it's natural
flow of veins and ripples along the surface, and it's overall unique shape. The freeness that an eagle represents,
helps to reflect the unrestrained boundaries found in nature. These unrestrained boundaries are known all too well by
wild creatures like the moose. The wing of the eagle carries the feature as its head finds its place on the stem
of the antler.
Different natural elements are sometimes added to help give the carving a setting or flow of life and spirit. Typically,
I add different kinds of antler, like elk or deer, as a base. On occasion, I have used drift wood or beaver block.
Because moose antler is hard like ivory it allows for intricate detailing. The burning technique I use enhances
the antler with natural highlights, similar to bringing out the grain in a piece of wood. The polishing method,
helps to naturally seal the pores and creates a lasting radiant shine. This process also insures the longevity
of the antler.
No laser equipment, paints, stains or sealers are ever used on my sculptures. Through the use of my hands every
process used is natural.
The remarkable way, year after year, all of these minerals are brought together in an awesome creature like the
moose, affords me the pleasure of making these one of a kind pieces, to send all over the world. These sculptures
intrigue and are appreciated by everyone that looks upon them.
As for me, I am a self-taught artist, born and raised in central Alberta, Canada. I’ve always been an outdoorsman,
but then again, in Alberta its kind of hard not to be an outdoorsman. Alberta’s beautiful Rocky Mountains, vast
prairie landscapes, and fabulous lakes make for the perfect place to truly cultivate a person’s deep love for nature.
Yes, I realize I have been blessed with the best kind of riches in life, the things that cannot be bought and sold.
The fulfillment of art, understanding how special and precious it is, is a gift to behold. Therefore, it is my
hope that through my art I might bring to others, “nature”, something beautiful and majestic. Antler art is something
one can not only appreciate with the eye, but also through touch. May the sculpture your purchasing warm the heart
and soul and fill you with awe every time you appreciate the majestic creature that grew such wonders. |
